UPAEP recognizes the interest of International Students to
collaborate with community organizations to enhance the
quality of life of its members. Also recognised as a private
catholic university with a strong social commitment, UPAEP
goes further by offering service learning programs to
International Students.
Such programs include an important academic component
combined with a service in the community which allow
students to obtain credits for those programs.
Projects in the community are diverse and include most of
the main fields of study such as education, nursing, pre
med and medical studies, business, and liberal arts.
Programs are offered during the entire year and tailor
made programs are offered upon special request.
Given the incredible changes taking place in this increasingly global society,
UPAEP recognizes the strong needs that exist throughout the world. Service
learning represents a significant way to make a difference within a small urban
or rural community whether it be in your native country or in another country,
one that may have higher needs. As part of the UPAEP mission, service
learning is required for every student who graduates from the University. The
University also accepts non UPAEP students for short term service learning
projects volunteering in the urban community around the University and in
rural communities located within 40 to 50 minutes of the University. Social
enterprise projects are given priority in some areas.
Students from Universities in the U.S and other countries abroad will work
with different communities depending upon the students' interest, academic
field, career goals, or expertise. No previous experience is needed just a
willingness to learn about another culture, to improve the lives of others less
fortunate, and to care about person at growth. Based upon information
received on the application , service learning volunteers will be assigned to a
specific community and to a project that most appropriately fits your needs.
Both undergraduate and graduate students are eligible. An intermediate level
of Spanish is recommended. Students in Social Work, Environmental Studies,
Nutrition, Public Health, Education, Counseling, Architecture, English as a
Second Language, Business, Anthropology, Sociology, Craft Arts as well as
other areas are invited to apply. The range of projects appropriate to a variety
of student interests is great.
